‘NASH CAMP Historical Lodge Tour’

Many of us in Lovells Township have seen the road sign off of Lovells road, but do we know the history of the man that the camp and road is named after, maybe so, maybe not.

This year’s Lovells Township Historical Society’s Historical Lodge Tour is at ‘NASH CAMP’ on the high bank of the North Branch of the Au Sable River. The current owner, John Bates Sr., of Heidtman Steel has been gracious enough to allow LTHS to have our 4th Historic Lodge Tour at this historic site.

Charles W. Nash, an indentured servant at age 6 and president of General Motors in 1912, became one of the Automobile Titans along with Will Durant, Henry Ford (his dear fishing and hunting partner), and Alfred P. Sloan. Nash was known as a man of wisdom, substance and heart … mostly heart.

Come tour the ‘NASH CAMP’ property, walk thru the 1960 Mid-Century Modern Lodge built by his grandson Charles Nash Miller. Unfortunately the original two story lodge built by Nash in the 1920’s is gone, although we will display photos of the old lodge at the tour along with historical photos of Charles W. Nash and a very interesting parallel career of John Bates Sr.

A SPECIAL EVENT the night before the tour will be held at the Lovells Township Hall. The Great Grandson of Charles W. Nash, James Wheary, who is an automotive historian and lecturer, will present:

‘Charles Nash – The Greatest Rags to Riches Story in American History’.
